Systemic Lupus Erythematosus | SLE
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic (long-term) autoimmune disease. It is caused when the body’s immune system becomes confused and begins attacking the body.
It’s important to know that there are different types of lupus. Some people have lupus that only attacks the skin. This is known as cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). Others have lupus that attacks the skin, the joints, and other organs. This is known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We’ll use the term lupus to mean systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in this explanation.
